The Magic Of Motown

Brass bellows, guitars hum and drums boom in time to the majestic marvel of Motown. Bradford was certainly Dancing on The Ceiling last night as The Magic of Motown blessed us with its presence. This revolving door of four men and three women stunned us to the core and were backed by an incredible seven-piece band.

With such eclectic Motown artists being represented it was impossible to boil down favourite acts. From Smokey Robinson to The Temptations and The Supremes to the Jackson Five, everything was tantalisingly brilliant.

The showmanship emitted shockwaves which inevitably sent the audience flying their hands with delight and moving All Night Long. One could argue the cast started a Chain Reaction, one of many songs sung that night, which kept audiences dying for more hits.

The show ran at an immense pace and by the time of the interval, the atmosphere became electric as the cast churned out even more hits. Mass sing-a-longs to numbers such as I Want You Back, Stop in The Name of Love, Superstition and Endless Love gave fuel for the cast to keep going. They never slowed down the pace once. The singers seemed to be changing every ten minutes into dazzling outfits that shimmered and glistened in the strobe lighting. If only they sold the incredible sequined tuxedoes and flamboyant shoes!

The singers had incredible vocal range, not to mention the audience, who really gave them a run for their money. With such incredible style, tone and technique every song was belted out from the heart, each with a emotional heft.

Such is the grandiose nature of Motown; the audience were left with a spring in their step and desperately pining for the show to carry on for another two hours. Not to mention the outstanding dance moves, which had everyone attempting to slide and kick around St George’s Hall pretending to live that impossible fantasy of being a slick dancer.

This show is certainly worth the watch and definitely a nice way to start the weekend. As well as giving us a glimpse into the immense magic that is Motown.
