York has secured Purple Flag accreditation for a fifth consecutive year, cementing its reputation as one of the UK's safest and most welcoming evening destinations.

The internationally recognised award celebrates towns and cities that offer a vibrant, safe and well-managed night-time economy.

Independent assessors visited the city earlier this year, meeting partners and experiencing the evening economy first-hand. They praised the visible presence of local police, Street Angels, York BID Rangers, Night Safe Officers, Taxi Marshals and Riverside Marshals, describing the partnership approach as one of York's key strengths.
The report highlighted York's ability to blend hospitality, culture and heritage in a way that appeals to all ages, with assessors commending independent businesses, visitor attractions, easy-to-navigate streets and public art projects.

Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at York BID and Purple Flag Co-ordinator, said: "This award belongs to all the organisations, businesses and volunteers who work together to create a city centre that locals and visitors can enjoy with confidence."

Assessors also noted initiatives including the York BID Safety Network, PubWatch, Best Bar None and the Respect Not Regret campaign. Partners say they will continue working to expand these schemes and invest in the city's public spaces.

Purple Flag is awarded by the Association of Town and City Management as a mark of excellence for destinations that successfully manage their evening and night-time economies.
