We have turned the corner on another weekend, which means there is yet another midweek of sports ready to entertain, delight or annoy. This week, there are international and domestic competitions to get stuck into for the next seven days.

Tuesday 28th October, International Friendly, England W v Australia W, 19:00

The Lionesses are back for their second run of international friendlies following their historic victory at the Euros this summer.

Wembley plays host to Australia, who are ranked 15th in the world and come into this following back-to-back victories over Panama and another home nation in Wales, which they beat 2-1 away in Cardiff.

The Matildas have actually only lost once in their last nine fixtures, which was a 1-0 loss to Panama in early July. The only other deviation in that record is a 1-1 draw at home to Slovenia.

England have themselves been on a good run with five straight wins before an early barrage of goals from Bia Zaneratto and Dudinha sealed a 2-1 win for Brazil at Wembley on Saturday. That was their first loss since they were again beaten 2-1 in the Euros group stages by France.

That early loss in the competition ultimately meant nothing, as the Lionesses went on to seal a second Euros trophy with a victory over Spain in the final. But they will have to improve if they are to redeem themselves from last weekend's loss against a Brazil side that had a player sent off.

When the two sides have faced previously, it has been England that has come off the better, with the Aussies picking up just two wins in six. The last time the two sides met was the World Cup in 2023, where the Lionesses ran out 3-1 winners.

Wednesday 29th October EFL Cup Liverpool v Crystal Palace 19:45

Now to domestic cup action, as we have Crystal Palace looking to once again go far in the cups following their historic FA Cup win in 2025. Standing in their way is Liverpool, a side accustomed to listing silverware with a point to prove following recent disappointments in the Premier League.

The Reds are in the midst of a title defence after Arne Slot’s men took on the mantle of Jurgen Klopp and finished top of the Premier League in 2024/25. Thus far their defence has been meek, with just five wins in nine matches.

They are also recovering from four straight defeats in the league, which equals the number of total games lost in the league last campaign. That record was sealed at the weekend with a 3-2 away loss to Brentford.

Liverpool’s recent record leaves much to be desired considering that if you also add in their European exploits, they have only managed one win in their last six, which was a convincing 5-1 win over Frankfurt.

Palace are also having a recent drop-off as the Eagles find themselves three matches without victory in all competitions, including a shock loss to Larnaca in the Conference League, a 3-3 draw with Bournemouth and a 2-1 loss to Everton.

Prior to the drought seen in recent weeks, Palace were the only unbeaten side in the Premier League and have looked a more solid outfit in head coach Oliver Glasner’s second season in charge.

This will be another test for both teams and managers to rectify their form. It was Glasner who passed the test last time the two sides met in cup competitions, with the Community Shield ending in a 3-2 Palace win.

Date: 29/10/2025

Time: 19:45

Venue: Anfield Stadium, Liverpool

The match will be shown on Sky Sports Go, Sky Sports Premier League.

Friday 31st October Sky Bet Championship Wrexham v Coventry City 20:00

We are in the Championship now with a tasty battle between two sides who are at opposite ends of the league table.

Coventry have been firing on all cylinders under Frank Lampard as they find themselves three points clear at the top of the league. They are yet to still lose a match and have been on a fine run of six straight wins.

Their latest fixture was a 3-1 home win against Watford, which consolidated their place as an automatic promotion chaser and bolstered their already impressive record of 34 goals scored, the most in the division by a staggering 14 goals.

Wrexham are similarly doing well given their new home in the second tier after gaining three promotions on the spin from the National League. Despite them playing League One football last season, they were tipped to be more than suited to playing in the Championship due to their financial clout and raft of summer signings.

So far, the Red Dragons have been slightly underwhelming compared to pre-season expectations, with 14 points accrued and only three match wins in 12 games. Despite the less than stellar record, they have been seemingly turning a corner with just one loss in their last eight matches, including last weekend when they earned a 1-1 draw away to Middlesbrough, who are also an automatic promotion chaser.

There is still all to play for in the Championship, and this fixture could either consolidate things at the top or throw doubt on Coventry’s credentials and embolden Wrexham into starting their uptick in league position and results.

Date: 31/10/2025

Time: 20:00

Venue: Racecourse Ground, Wrexham

The match will be shown on Sky Sports Football.
