The Lottery Winners are adept at playing vast arenas following the recently completed European tour supporting Robbie Williams. Their gig at the Victoria Theatre in Halifax is a more modest affair in terms of audience numbers; however, as regards the magnitude of the event, it is one that is for a very worthy cause.

All the proceeds from their performance are going to the Halifax-based charity Overgate Hospice in their Big Build Appeal, which aims to raise a huge £13m in order to build a new care wing which will transform their current site in Elland and provide outstanding care for end-of-life patients in the Calderdale area.

Before arriving on stage for their only date in Yorkshire on their current tour, band members Thom Rylance and Katie Lloyd appeared on the video screen talking about their involvement with the hospice. Their words were honest and emotional, providing the Halifax audience with a different side to the band.

During the show, Rylance was an engaging and enthusiastic frontman; seemingly the jovial aspect of Robbie Williams' nature appeared to have influenced Rylance—if ever he were to leave the Lottery Winners, he would easily find a career as a comedian, such as his quick wit and rapport with an audience.

Though the evening was in aid of a serious cause, The Lottery Winners' music remained a more playful affair. Opening number Superpower is a track that signifies all that is best about their music: melodic, memorable and mesmerising.

The new track Monaco, which is about escaping to the tax-free haven on the French Riviera, perfectly complements The Lottery Winners' upbeat attitude.

Your Last Song, another new track from the forthcoming deluxe version of the album Koko was upbeat and infectious. “It’s kinda celebratory, kinda sad, definitely catchy, definitely very good, and a bit tongue-in-cheek. A goodbye with a middle finger and a wink! is how the band described the track.

As the band concluded with Start Again, their unparalleled ability to create a huge connection with their fans was evident.

Seeing The Lottery Winners is a joyful experience of humour, talent, well-rehearsed anthems, and spontaneity – on a night that was for a well-deserved cause, the band definitely hit the jackpot in more ways than one.
