"Flower lovers can fight off the short expiration date by using one of a few of our favourite items to keep their favourite blooms thriving for longer. Most importantly, our handy tricks include everyday items you may find at the back of your cupboard, so no fancy flower food or expensive preservatives are required."

2p coins

This trending hack calls on people to place a 2p coin at the bottom of their flower vase before adding in a bunch of fresh tulips. Unknown to many, they contain natural antimicrobial properties, which prevent bacteria's growth, which causes blossoms like tulips to dry up and wilt.

Bleach

Although it may sound like a recipe for disaster, freshly cut flowers will last longer in their vase when a ΒΌ teaspoon of bleach per 1 litre of water. As well as helping to keep flowers thriving for longer, the bleach will also prevent the water from becoming cloudy and inhibits bacterial growth.

Sugar

This cupboard staple can be used as a preservative to keep flowers looking healthy for longer. Three tablespoons of sugar should be dissolved into one litre of warm water. When filling the vase, the freshly cut stems should be covered by seven to ten centimetres of prepared water.

Hairspray

This perfect partner to any hair routine should also be used when preparing a gorgeous vase of flowers! Spritzing hairspray over an arranged vase of flowers will keep them looking pristine for longer without wilting.

Apple cider vinegar

A product that has become renowned for having its many uses around the house, it also works well for cut flowers. Vinegar works very well when combined with sugar. Use equal parts for each litre of water and change the water every couple of days to ensure further longevity.
