Scran - Harrogate’s New Bar And Kitchen

I must admit, I have never heard of the term Scran before but it turns out that it is a northern word for food.

Scran is also the name of a new bar and restaurant that is situated on the ground floor of the Yorkshire Hotel in Harrogate. You can actually enter too from the rear of the building giving the impression that the bar and restaurant is a stand alone entity.

Hand sanitizer stations are everywhere and you check your body temperature before you enter by way of placing your wrist by a sensor that gives a reading. Tables are socially distanced and we got the impression that we were dining in a safe environment.

There is a sign outside though that proudly proclaims that their Sunday lunch is the best in Yorkshire. A proud boast that might just live up to that claim.

It is a clsssy interior and feels modern without being too on trend. I liked how they had a mixed clientele too, all in all it was a good relaxing atmosphere.


The soup of the day was a thick and rich vegetable soup served with warm crusty bread, whilst the Pitta and Hummus that my partner decided upon was presented well and of good quality.

The Proper Sunday Roast comes with a roast rump of beef, duck fat roast potatoes, a very good selection of greens and carrots, Yorkshire pudding, mash and gravy. They might even do Pigs in blankets if you ask nicely or a bowl of cauliflower cheese. The main meal costs £14.95 and good value for money.

The background music though might not be to everyone’s taste. If you like the Stereophonics, Razorlight and The Fratellis you will be ok. As the music isn’t played too loudly it does not detract from the dining experience. I enjoyed the music but for some it might feel like they are at Leeds Festival!

The Sticky Toffee Pudding at £6.00 comes served with Toffee sauce and Vanilla ice cream and was a rich and robust treat. My partner tried the Strawberries and Cream which really is Vanilla and Basil cheesecake with strawberry compote. Apart from what tasted like frozen strawberries on top, it was a winner.

It might just be the best Yorkshire Sunday lunch I have tasted in Harrogate for sure.
