The celebration of Her Majesty Queen Camilla’s birthday in York provided more than a moment of national pride and tradition. As the 21-gun salute echoed across the city, it also marked the beginning of a significant new chapter for military sport and community wellbeing in Yorkshire.

The occasion celebrated a once-in-a-generation £12.3 million investment, announced by Maj. Gen. (Retired) Darrell Amison, Chief Executive, Army Sport, that will transform sporting facilities in Catterick Garrison. The funding will deliver a state-of-the-art rugby hub alongside a new indoor sports centre, creating modern facilities that will serve members of the armed forces, their families and the wider community for many years to come.

Bringing together representatives from Army Sport, Army Rugby League, the Rugby Football League, the Army Central Fund and Nuffield Health, the event demonstrated the strength of the partnership needed to deliver projects of this scale. It also reflected a shared commitment to investing in people through the power of sport.

Adding further significance to the day was the attendance of rugby league legends Paul Sculthorpe MBE and Jamie Jones-Buchanan MBE. Their support reinforced the important role that sport plays in developing leadership, resilience and teamwork while creating opportunities that extend far beyond the playing field.

The new facilities will support participation at every level, from grassroots engagement to elite performance, while strengthening the Army’s partnership with the Rugby Football League through its “Join Well – Serve Well – Leave Well” initiatives. More importantly, they will provide spaces that promote physical health, mental wellbeing, rehabilitation and stronger connections between the military and civilian communities.

For Yorkshire, this investment represents far more than bricks and mortar. It is a lasting commitment to the people who serve our nation and to the communities that support them. Through collaboration, shared ambition and sustained investment, Catterick is set to become one of the Army’s leading centres for military sport, leaving a legacy that will benefit generations to come.
