Refectory Kitchen & Terrace, York

General view
General view
The Refectory restaurant in York is situated in the Principal Hotel but can also be directly accessed.

The chef Jason Wardill has recently introduced a new menu, which uses Yorkshire ingredients.

On the menu is Spiced Yorkshire Lamb Rump, Yorkshire ale cottage pie and dishes including various Yorkshire cheeses.

The restaurant seemed to be popular with residents and also diners who had chosen specifically to visit this stylish restaurant.

They have now employed some good staff who are knowledgeable about the menu and wine list.

I was served by Richard who was originally from Johannesburg but has lived in York for some time.

His recommendation of the Conde Villar Vinho Verde Branco white wine from Portugal complemented my starter and main superbly.

Friendly, attentive service served in a welcoming atmosphere.

My starter of Harrogate blue cheese with burnt apple and candied walnuts had just the right amount of cheese so as not to suffocate the taste of the apple and walnuts.

The menu has the usual mains of steaks, pork fillets and fish dishes, but I decided to go for one of the 'Refectory Favourites' namely the beer-battered day boat fish and chips served with mushy peas.

The fish was cooked perfectly and the triple cooked chips were very 'moreish', though priced at £16.95 others may find the Hanger 8oz steak at £17.00 better value.

The dessert menu is not too lengthy, though again there are Yorkshire specialities of Yorkshire Parkin along with a selection of Yorkshire cheeses.

My chocolate and cherry tart, hazelnuts and clotted cream rounded off a nice meal.
