Ilkley Trophy – Day 4 Summary

The incessant rain on Tuesday disrupted much of the scheduled order of play at the Lexus Ilkley Trophy today, with several matches moving indoors, and the rest having to wait until the rain cleared at 4pm to get underway outside.

It was the Men that moved indoors, as the remainder of the first round matches were completed as well as a couple of second round clashes, but the British focus was on Harry Wendelken, the final remaining Brit to complete his first round match. Wendelken was up against lucky loser Sho Shimabukuro of Japan, and it’s likely that the move indoors hurt Wendelken.

Brits generally grow up training and playing on grass courts more than players from other nations, while indoor hard courts are abundant in most countries, and so the playing field is levelled somewhat. Wendelken did well to fight back to level the match, after dropping the first set 6-2, but the decider saw him broken twice and eventually beaten, 6-2 6-7(2) 6-2.

The result leaves qualifier Charles Broom as the only British interest left in the Men’s draw. Broom is first up on Centre Court tomorrow.

Once the rain had cleared, the Women had the green light to get things started outside, and first up on Centre Court was Yuriko ‘Lily’ Miyazaki, who was up against Spanish clay-court specialist Alina Bolsova, the fifth seed.

Miyazaki seemed to be in control of the game at first, clinching the first set via a tiebreak and racing to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but the wheels seemed to come off at that stage, and she lost six of the next seven games to surrender the second set to the Spaniard.

It is a test of mental strength to recover in situations when you have relinquished the upper hand to your opponent, but Miyazaki couldn’t quite dig deep enough to force the momentum back in her favour – she lost the opening five games of the final set, and by the time she did get on the board, it was too late. She lost 6-7(5) 6-4 6-1 in the end – but it wasn’t a bad performance, considering her opponent is over 100 places higher than her in the world rankings.

That was the end of the British interest today, with Anna Brogan the final British female to play her first-round match tomorrow, so it’s worth at this stage reporting on the fates of the rest of the field.

Denis Kudla and Sebastian Ofner are the first two men into the quarter-finals after they both won their indoor matches today; meanwhile, the biggest name in the Men’s draw, former world number seven David Goffin, was due to complete his first-round match today but was handed the victory after his opponent was unable to take to the court through injury. Goffin will play Juncheng Shang in the last 16; Shang beat Brit Stuart Parker and then Ukrainian Oleksii Krutykh to qualify for the main draw, before winning in straight sets against Emilio Gomez off Ecuador earlier today.

The women’s first round is still far from complete, but the last match on Centre Court this evening saw Ukrainian 21-year-old Daria Singer pull off quite the shock, knocking out the second seed Anna Schimedlova of Slovakia 6-3 6-1 in a dominant performance. Snigur grew into the first set gradually before breaking twice to lead 5-2, but couldn’t serve out the set and required a third break of the Slovakian serve to take control of the match. From then on, she didn’t look back, winning the match 6-3 6-1.

It’s expected that tomorrow will be a busy day, with the first and second round due to be completed ahead of Thursday’s quarter-finals. Several players, especially the women yet to play their first round matches, will be expected to play twice – and the doubles draw will be getting into full swing tomorrow as well. It would be a good day to get down to the Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club!
