Daniel O’Donnell - Daniel (Demon Music Group)

One thing that cannot be denied about Daniel O’Donnell is that he is very popular, in fact he has had at least 42 albums in the UK album charts spending 300 weeks in the charts over the years.

In a way he is like Yorkshire’s Jane McDonald in that he knows exactly what his audience likes and gives it to them by covering familiar songs. It’s not challenging but then again in the times we are living who needs more than something comfortable and relaxing? In a way it’s like wearing your favourite pair of slippers or soaking in a hot bath after a long walk.

Come What May won the Eurovision Song Contest in the early seventies and O’Donnell is well suited to the song. Memories Are Made of This might seem an obvious choice for the Irish singer but makes the track is own.

A duet with Majella O’Donnell on Remember Me gives the album a new twist. Forever Young might be a song that wasn’t known to his fan base before the release of this album - good to hear that he is not just covering the usual tracks you might associate him with.

Magic Moments comes across a little twee, however you have to hand it to him for his way of making a song sound like it was specifically written for him, in the same way that Westlife do.

Leaving On A Jet Plane might be what some of his detractors wish he would do, but the track is a good one to end the album. Whether you like the man or not it is hard not to be impressed by his success and loyal fans.

I am sure that this will be his 43rd album to enter the UK album charts.

I rate the album 3 out of 5.

Daniel O’Donnell performs his first ever live streamed concert from Millennium Forum Theatre, Derry on 1st November 2020. Tickets €20 in advance.
