Commenting on the Chancellor's mini-budget, Financial Times and MoneyWeek acclaimed economic historian and author of Pugnare: Economic Success and Failure, Dr. George Maher, said:
"To understand the economic challenges we face, commentators need to shift their focus away from the narrow twentieth century lens of Anthony Barber and Reaganomics. As Churchill observed, the further back we look, the further forward we can see.
"Liz Truss and her Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng are demonstrating the same sort of economic entrepreneurialism that Ancient Rome's success was founded upon. Fuelled by reduced regulation and a programme of infrastructure investment, the Chancellor's target of 2.5% per annum, if achieved, will see a doubling of GDP in 30 years. Average income will double in a generation. Children today will be twice as wealthy as their parents. This is the recipe for prosperity the country needs.
"It was exactly this drive and economic ambition that underpinned Ancient Rome's tremendous economic growth in the first century. Low taxes married with significant infrastructure investment via public private partnerships (first under Claudius and continued under Trajan) saw the establishment and expansion of a vast network of ports and roads across the Mediterranean. These, in turn, fuelled trade, economic growth and ultimately living standards.
"Rome's economic challenges emerged in the second century as this economic ambition and zeal fizzled out. Complacency set in and ultimately the system collapsed.
"Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng must ignore the groaning of the mandarins in the Treasury and their programme of managed decline. Both our, and our children's economic prosperity depends on it."
