Shed Seven first arrived on the music scene as part of the BritPop movement. Now, as the York band prepares to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary in 2024, they return with a new album, which is arguably one of the best yet.

Bringing in record producer and musician Youth (Embrace, The Cult, Killing Joke) has given the band new energy and perspective while also managing to retain all the best elements of Shed Seven.

Throughout, the album sparkles with a liberated exuberance, resulting in a joyful journey into the world of Shed Seven.

As the album kicks off with the energetic Let’s Go, the track sounds like a mix of Elton John’s Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting mixed with The Who!

Kissing California is their summer anthem, complete with Beach Boys harmonies, as the band aims to paint the town red. The Who influences come to the fore yet again on the boisterous Talk of the Town as a nifty guitar hook underpins a fine rock song.

Their fans have always come to expect a big ballad from the band; Let’s Go Dancing continues in the tradition of their other famous number, Chasing Rainbows.

Rowetta from Happy Mondays appears on In Ecstasy, delivering some fervent gospel vocals on an upbeat number that continues the upbeat feel of this accomplished album. Here, the band steps out of their comfort zone to guide Shed Seven to another level.

As the album concludes with Throwaway, the songs on this album are anything but. Shed Seven has released an album that brims with positivity, confidence, and sheer unadulterated rock ‘n’ roll.
