Thomas Pattinson, director and co-founder of York-based specialist construction business Waxwing Design and Build, is the latest regional professional in the hot seat as we give him just 10 minutes to answer our 10 burning questions.

What does a typical working day for you involve?

No two days look the same for me and my business partner Ralph, which is exactly why we love the job. In any given week we could be on a period property working through a heritage restoration, checking progress on a house extension, and in the workshop starting a piece of bespoke joinery – anything from a handcrafted fitted kitchen to elegant alcove cabinetry and made-to-measure furniture.

We also spend a lot of time with our clients, understanding their goals and ensuring every project is both aesthetically refined and practically buildable.

What makes your company special?

One key thing is trust. We’ve worked in the industry for many years and have seen first-hand how people’s previous bad experiences make them wary of future building work. We pride ourselves on our considered approach – from concept through to completion – and everything at Waxwing comes back to doing right by our clients.

The type of work we take on really sets us apart, too. We specialise in heritage restoration, considered residential extensions and specialist joinery, combining traditional craftsmanship with sustainable, energy-efficient building techniques.

We have a real passion for sustainability, looking at a building as a whole to ensure it performs well, breathes properly, and is genuinely healthier to live or work in.

This means, no matter whether a historic property or new build, we actively welcome the complex, unusual briefs – the ones many builders shy away from – and that's where we do our best work.

We're also very proud to be a vetted member of the Federation of Master Builders and hold the Government-endorsed TrustMark accreditation.

Do you dress up or down for work?

I usually dress down for work, as I'm on-site more often than not. That typically means safety boots and workwear. That said, we always aim to maintain a clean, professional, and tidy appearance while on site.

What piece of advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

Skills and experience will develop over time, so focus on maintaining a positive attitude, being reliable, and showing a willingness to learn. These qualities will earn respect and create opportunities throughout your career. Take care of your health, manage your finances wisely, and build a reputation as someone who is dependable and enjoyable to work with. The opportunities that arise from a strong reputation can be invaluable.

What’s your favourite Yorkshire venue for an event or team away day?

It’s difficult to choose just one. Yorkshire offers something for everyone, from outdoor adventures and beautiful nature reserves to thriving music venues and independent restaurants.

How do you prefer to travel for business?

I prefer to travel by van for business. It’s the most practical option when moving between jobs across the region, as it allows me to carry all the tools and materials I need and stay prepared throughout the day.

What’s your favourite place in Yorkshire to relax?

The Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors are my favourite places for relaxation because of their stunning natural scenery, tranquil countryside, and fresh air. I enjoy peaceful surroundings, which allow me to unwind and reconnect with nature and wildlife.

Where is your favourite place to eat in Yorkshire, and what dish do you recommend?

There are so many great places to eat in Yorkshire that it's difficult to choose just one. The last place I visited was Eat Your Greens in Leeds, which serves organic, seasonal dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. I can highly recommend it.

What do you miss most about Yorkshire when you’re away?

The combination of its beautiful countryside and the warm, friendly people. There’s something unique and special about the rolling hills, historic towns, and the sense of community that makes Yorkshire feel like home.

Do you have any business rules that you swear by?

Trust and transparency are at the heart of everything we do. Many of our clients entrust us with their homes while they're away, so honesty is non-negotiable.

We're always upfront with people, even when the answer isn't the easiest one to hear. We never cut corners or compromise on quality, and we take the time needed to deliver every project to the highest standard – focusing on doing the job properly rather than rushing to meet a lower price point.

It's part of why we work on a cost-plus basis too, unlike a lot of contractors. It gives clients full visibility on what they're paying for and the flexibility to adapt as a project evolves, rather than being boxed into a fixed quote.
