A new survey has revealed how we would like to spend the extra hour of daylight now that the clocks have gone back today.

The survey carried out for The Parts Alliance to mark the end of British Summer time found:

52% of respondents said they would use their time to relax, whilst 30% said they would rather sleep for the extra hour and 10% stated they would spend the time with their family. But not surprisingly no one said they would like to spend it on the side of the road in rush hour traffic, waiting for a breakdown service to arrive.

"The darker, colder mornings means that our journeys take longer and many commuters have to leave for work earlier, so the extra hour of daylight is very precious. However many drivers this winter will experience breakdowns through lack of servicing," explains David Bowen, The Parts Alliance.

The survey looked into driver's car servicing habits which revealed that 12% of motorists are extending the time between service intervals to save money.

Since the UK felt the bite of recession in late 2008, motorists have reduced the amount they spend on their vehicle by 2.3% by visiting repair centres less frequently, repairing parts rather than replacing them.

"With time and money so precious it's important that our cars are ready and serviced for winter driving conditions. The value of a reliable winter service should not be underestimated," Bowen added.

"22% of respondents have waited between one and four hours for recovery following a breakdown, meaning that the precious hour gained when the clocks go back, could be lost waiting for roadside assistance."

"We recommend you prepare your vehicle for winter by ensuring your battery, oil, lights, brakes and tyres are in good working order. Independent garages offers extremely competitive service and maintenance deals, and a quality independent garage will only use approved parts," Bowen concluded.
