Jon Crossley, Director of Burrow and Crowe Chartered Accountants
Can you provide an overview of your role and what the business offers?

I´m a qualified accountant and director of Burrow & Crowe which offers specialist advice to SMEs and owner-managed companies across the Yorkshire region. In 2009, the business celebrated 25 years of service.

How long have you been in the profession?

Too long to remember - about 22 years! Yes, I know I don't look that old!

How long have you worked at Burrow and Crowe?

I joined Burrow & Crowe in 2001 as a manager and became a partner in 2004.

How did you start out in the industry?

I attended Oakbank School in Keighley before joining a local firm, Clark Whitehill Josolyne (which no longer exists), as a trainee accountant and worked my way up the ladder.

What previous experience is required to work in this industry?

No previous experience is needed - if you join as a trainee as you will receive training from your employer. Obviously for more senior roles, employers will expect qualified or qualified-by-experience people. One of the key requisites is the ability to communicate financial information and advice in layman´s terms for those who have limited understanding of financial reports.

Why did you choose your career choice?

I chose this career path because it allowed me to continue with my sports at the weekend. I stayed within the profession because I enjoy the variety of work, getting involved with different clients and helping their businesses to grow.
Key areas of work we undertake at Burrow & Crowe include problem solving for clients, improving systems and strategic planning - it´s challenging but enormously rewarding.

How did you find out about/ apply for the position you are in now? Or, for company owners and senior members of staff, where is the best place to look for and apply for positions in this profession?

Generally, you can either send CV's direct to companies which fit your profile or, alternatively, you can contact a good recruitment agent that will give you advice and guide you in the right direction.

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?

The variation is amazing - there are no mundane or set tasks. It can range from meeting potential new clients, raising finance by liaising with banks and other lenders to reviewing accounts and tax files.

What sort of rewards/ benefits/ perks can someone expect from this profession?

The rewards are based on the effort and commitment you put into your work. The hours are long but the client contact and personal fulfilment of helping them achieve their goal is immense.

Do you need any qualifications for this position and if so what and what´s the best way to gain them?

The qualifications to be a partner are generally to be a member of either the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) or the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). However staff can have a good career in general practice without these qualifications and the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) gives a good basic grounding.

How many hours do you work a week?

On average, around 50

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your job?

We understand how important people´s businesses are to them and how much hard work goes on behind the scenes. Assisting clients to develop their business and see it grow is what I enjoy the most.

What are the worst aspects of the job?

Insane amounts of red tape and hoop jumping!

What advice would you give someone considering a career like yours?

Have realistic expectations - it takes time and dedication, so be prepared.
