MP for Rotherham Denis MacShane is calling for an investigation into the standard of care and aftercare provided by Birkdale Clinic in Rotherham in the light of the ongoing scandal surrounding PIP breast implants.

Reacting to Andrew Lansley's statement in the commons yesterday, MacShane asked the Health Secretary to send official to investigate the clinic. He also revealed that "Mr Bhatnagar has threatened groups in south Yorkshire with "unimaginable consequences" if they raise this issue".

The clinic, which is currently refusing to provide screening for former patients who have received PIP implants unless they pay £150 per breast, has somewhat of a murky past. The clinic was refused registration by the CQC after it was confirmed by a tribunal that the hospital was "only meeting half of the national minimum standards".

Jo Dent, the regional director of the Care Quality Commission in Yorkshire and the Humber, was quoted as saying "The panel noted that part of Dr. Bhatnagar's evidence raised serious concerns about his attitude to compliance with basic standards". Dr Promod Bhatnagar was suspended by the GMC between November 2009 and May 2010 before being reinstated.

In his question to Lansley yesterday, MacShane went on to suggest that "we should clear up all the fuss about bills afterwards", and said that Lansley compared unfavourably with his European counterparts.
