Keighley and Ilkley MP Kris Hopkins has made a second and final appeal to the Leader of Bradford Council to release much-needed grant assistance to the Keighley Cougars.

Initial budget proposals drawn up by the ruling Labour Group included the ending of a £20,000 annual award to the Co-operative Championship club.

Mr Hopkins subsequently wrote to Council Leader Ian Greenwood urging him to reconsider this decision because of the "hugely important role [played by the Cougars] at the heart of community life in Keighley," adding, "the removal of their award is likely to put the very future of the club at risk."

However, in a response just received, Cllr Andrew Thornton, the Council's Executive Member for Environment and Sport, concedes that "no decision has yet been made."

Mr Hopkins has now written to Cllr Greenwood once again asking him to approve the release of the grant to Keighley Cougars when the authority meets on Thursday (23rd) to sign off its budget for the new financial year.

The Keighley and Ilkley MP wrote: "I fully appreciate the huge pressures on public finances at the present time, and Bradford Council is certainly no exception.

"However, it is clear to me that Keighley Cougars were under the impression that their normal grant would be forthcoming for 2012-13.

"The consequences of this money not being received could be catastrophic for the club and the wider town.

"I therefore ask you, at this late stage, to approve the release of this money so the club can continue its positive efforts on and off the field on behalf of the community they do so much to bring together."
