Draft budget proposals published by the ruling Labour Group include a proposal to stop a £20,000 award to the Co-operative Championship club.
Mr Hopkins said:
"I am appalled at this news and the potential impact the withdrawal of the funding might have on Keighley Cougars, a club which plays such a positive and cherished role at the heart of our community.
"I do appreciate that resources are limited at the present time and that Bradford Council, like every other public body, will have to make some difficult choices in the next financial year.
"However, Gary Fawcett, the club's chairman, has made clear that he was not aware of any plans to remove this much-needed funding.
"He has also underlined that the Cougars' financial plan included these monies being received in May 2012 to allow the club to break even.
"As a result, Labour's proposed removal of this grant is putting the very future of the club at risk.
"I have therefore written to Ian Greenwood, the leader of ruling Labour Group, to demand that this decision is revisited and the Cougars' funding reinstated for the next financial year."
The Conservative MP added:
"I have said repeatedly in recent months that Keighley and Ilkley have no place in Bradford district and we must seek our independence from City Hall.
"This episode is just the latest illustration of why I believe this must happen sooner rather than later."
