The Benefits Of Going Bespoke

One of the main benefits of using an interior designer, is the opportunity to utilise their access to products and services that some deem very difficult to obtain, primarily that little black book of contacts that each interior designer has honed and collected over the course of their career.

From suppliers to trade specialists, this collection of local and national contacts can take your home design project from just wonderful to downright amazing. And one thing the very best interior designers should have (in my very humble opinion), is access to incredibly talented bespoke craftspeople.

Perhaps you have your sights set on a sofa in a rare fabric that’s not available on the high street, or even a unique, dolphin-shaped bathtub for your master bathroom. From upholsters to furniture makers and beyond, the joy of going bespoke with the items in your home, is that the world is your oyster.

Across the North, we are blessed with an abundance of extremely talented artisan craftspeople, and we at AMC Design have spent the past decade collating and harnessing these contacts.

For one of our recent projects, we instructed the help of artisan upholsterer and furniture maker, and Yorkshire local, Emma Patchett. Emma’s expertise has been honed over years of painstakingly producing beautifully upholstered pieces, such as headboards, ottomans, cushions and everything else that makes a home personal and beautiful.

For the St John’s House project, we instructed Emma to produce an oversized headboard in a glorious Jim Thompson fabric, which stands out as the centrepiece for the room. The headboard has been designed to curve up over the picture rail, creating a sense of grandeur. The colours used in the beautiful fabric are then reflected across the room, in the cushions, ottoman and curtains, The result is a wonderfully bright yet comfortable master bedroom, with a real wow factor.

Without the help of Emma and her incredible talents, the room would have looked very different. Though other options are very varied and often striking, it is never the same as creating a bespoke piece that is designed for the space and fits perfectly. The fear is often that going custom will cost the earth, but with careful planning, and the use of statement pieces and hero items, this doesn’t need to be the case. Creating a wonderful bespoke piece can naturally take time so be aware of the supplier’s time scales before getting started with your project.

If you’re interested in starting your own project, have a look at our gallery for some inspiration, and see if you can spot the bespoke pieces in our spaces.
