Interview With JeyB

Mexican singer/songwriter JeyB is an old school pop fan, whose own musical output has started to garner international attention. His latest single sees him team up with La Chule Ruiz to directly speak out about the ever-present homophobia and attached violence. Moved by the powerful words and delivery of the musical moment, we caught up with JeyB to find out more.

First and foremost, hello and how are you?

Hello!!! I'm very happy to be with you presenting my music and grateful.

Tell us about the record you have just released…

Well it is called PINK, it is my first unpublished song in English in support of the LGBTIQ community against homophobia and violence, it collaborated with the influencer and activist LA CHULE RUIZ and we try to express a message of love and understanding and above all respect towards the people of the community, LA CHULE RUIZ helped me bring the idea to life and we loved the result.

It is the fourth single from my EP, Forever 25, that came out in 2018 that includes "MARCAME LA PIEL", "VOLVERTE A VER", "30 MINUTOS" and "PINK".

How do you feel when releasing a record?

Happy and grateful to be able to create music with cause and to be able to touch hearts and conscience through my work.

What inspired the record?

I was inspired to run into many cases of violence and homophobia on the Internet, cases where they beat people or even kill them just for having a different sexual preference, I was shocked and felt the need to try to help in my own way, doing what I love, which is music.

Tell us a little about your creative process...

My creative process is very personal, I like to sing and talk about things that touch my heart, my soul and that flutter in my mind until they become songs.

If the record were an animal, what animal would it be?

Without a doubt a Lion, I identify a lot with them, and just like my music, I think we can all be tender and beautiful, but we should never be trampled, we have to roar and raise our voices, and demonstrate that we are made when necessary.

Define your sound in five words…

My sound in 5 words, omg, good one! You have made me think...

I think it would be...

Daring
Free
Cool
Loving
Human

What was the first song that caught your attention?

It was by a Mexican singer called FEY. The song was called "Half Orange". It is pop from the 90s!

What was the first song you bought?

I think it was "What I've Been Looking For" from High School Musical. I loved that song!! I am very poppy!!!

And the first album?

It was the 90s FEY album, I think it was still a cassette and it was one of my treasures...

What was the best concert you have ever seen?

The first concert I lived and enjoyed was the catharsis tour of the Mexican singer and Latin pop princess Belinda, I went to see it 7 times!

What did the experience teach you that you have translated to your own shows?

I learned that you have to give everything, sing as if it were the last time, give yourself to the public and try to be original and offer people an experience that you cannot live so easily anywhere.

What other artist are you most excited to hear from?

In addition to Belinda I love Miley Cyrus, more in her crazy stage, I love people who are not afraid to take risks and try new things. Other singers that I also love are Paulina Rubio, Natalia Jiménez, Gwen Stefani, PINK, Avril Lavigne, Adele, Madonna, Britney and Xtina, and also some rock and pop rock, I like Guns and Roses, Draft Punk, Paramore, and Tame Impala.

If you could work with them, what would you hope to record?

I would love to mix Latin rhythms and take them out of their comfort zone, for example, make them sing Spanish, it would be very interesting, although some have already done it, I know it would be worth talking about.

If you had to pick three artists to be filed next to, who would they be and why?

Madonna, Paulina Rubio and Miley Cyrus are so explosive in their shows that I think it would be a great experience for the public to have them together, for me a great honor and an epic moment!!!

If you could jam with one artist alive or dead, who would it be?

With Belinda, she was the first singer that inspired me when I was a child, because she started her career as a child too and with great success, it motivated me a lot, so it would be a dream come true to sing with her.

If you could have written one song by another artist, what would it be?

Madonna's "Like A Virgin". Imagine if the HIT that immortalized her as the queen of world pop came from you, what an honor!!!

Someone is making a film of your life, who will play you?

I think Josh from the Drake series and Josh. People have always told me that I look alike.

Lastly, tell us one thing you have never revealed in an interview…

My song "30 Minutos" was a true story that had just happened to me weeks before I wrote it and recorded it, in the video I really cried and I couldn't stop crying after the cut, I think there I took everything out and it helped me overcome and move on.
