Leeds United fought to the very last minute in a 4 goal thriller away at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium, almost certainly guaranteeing them Premier League football for another season.
Following on from a 3-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers, which resulted in the opposition’s relegation, Daniel Farke’s side will have been hoping to continue their run of form.
Bournemouth, who currently sit in 7th place, recently announced the departure of manager Andoni Iraola at the end of the season, despite an incredible season with the Cherries. He is set to be replaced by Marco Rose, from RB Leipzig.
While the beginning of the match was fairly equal, the home side had the first chance, with Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow managing to save the ball after David Brooks was unable to reach it.
While there were efforts from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Brenden Aaronson and Noah Okafor, who has scored 3 times in his last 2 games, they were not successful.
For the home team, Adrien Tuffert and Ryan Christie were among those denied by Darlow.
The game remained goalless going into half-time.
Returning to the pitch following the break, Leeds were forced to swap Jayden Bogle for Joe Rodon, due to an injury to his right foot.
Leeds came into the second half in attack mode, with a chance from Noah Okafor blocked by Bournemouth.
The Cherries instantly responded, with Leeds defender Pascal Struijk preventing Christie from hitting the back of the net.
Gabriel Gudmunsson managed to clear a shot from Marcus Tavernier off the goal line, but Junior Kroupi was there to put the ball straight past Darlow, bringing the score to 1-0.
The Whites made 2 more changes, taking off Jaka Bijol and Noah Okafor for Lukas Nmecha and Wilfried Gnonto.
Soon after this decision, Gnonto fired the ball into the back of Bournemouth’s net, with the help of a Joe Rodon header and a James Hill deflection, bringing the scoreline back equal.
Continuing an impressive performance, Bournemouth pushed for a second, and found it in the 86th minute from Rayan, who was brought on as a substitute. Evanilson managed to score a third, but this was chalked off due to a very tight offside ruling.
In the final stages of injury time, Alex Scott thought he had cleared a throw in by Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu. Substitute Sean Longstaff found himself on the end of the ball, and put it into the back of the net, bringing the score back to 2-2.
This point was bad news for Burnley, who had also played and lost 1-0 to Manchester City, as this confirmed their relegation to the Championship once again.
Leeds will next play at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final, to a rapidly declining Chelsea side. The game will be played on Sunday 26th of April, and kicks off at 3pm.
