10 In 10: Steve McMann Founder And CEO At The Man Who Makes,

Steve McMann is founder and CEO at The Man Who Makes, a bespoke home décor and furnishings specialist located in Slaithwaite.

With over 16 years’ experience in the commercial glazing industry, this year Steve decided to swap the corporate office for his own garage workshop, and now spends his days making and mending a whole host of items – from miniature easels and photo clipboards to full-sized dining sets and at-home bars.

He is the latest regional business professional in the hot seat as The Yorkshire Times gives him just 10 minutes to answer our 10 burning questions.

What does a typical working day for you involve?

Every day is different – but I always start with a coffee or two. After that, it could involve anything from crafting a bespoke piece of furniture to reviving a customer’s wooden kitchen worktops.

What makes your company special?

Versatility – I offer a whole host of services, and can fulfil a wide range of jobs and requests. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a customer’s face light up when you’ve brought their idea to life – and I’m passionate about constantly delivering that feeling.

Do you have any business rules that you swear by?

Just be honest and trustworthy at all times. That’s the best way to build a loyal customer base.

Do you dress up or down for work?

Definitely dress down. You can’t exactly sand a table in a shirt and tie!

What piece of advice would you give your 18-year old self?

Probably take more risks and have belief in yourself. Although I loved my job in commercial glazing, it wasn’t what I wanted to do forever – sometimes I wish I had expanded my ‘making and mending’ hobby into a full-time business earlier on, but I suppose everything happens for a reason.

What’s your favourite Yorkshire venue for an event or team away day?

Because I’m new to the scene and am currently operating as a one-man band, I haven’t had chance for either, yet. But anything in the great outdoors would be ideal – there’s nothing I love more than a spot of scenery. I’m lucky that the view from my workshop is pretty spectacular.

How do you prefer to travel for business?

When I’m not busy creating pieces at home, I always use my van – which my oldest daughter has named Sven (from Frozen) – to get from one place to another.

What’s your favourite place in Yorkshire to relax?

We live in a rural area next to a canal, so there are so many great places to walk for a coffee and really decent food. And the fields are always full of animals – which the kids love.

Where is your favourite place to eat in Yorkshire, and what dish do you recommend?

Without a doubt, our local – The Rose and Crown. It’s in Slaithwaite, and they do a mega pie and chips. It always goes down well with a Farmers Blonde ale.

What do you miss most about Yorkshire when you’re away?

Definitely the countryside. All the fresh open space, and the pace of life is much more more chilled – which goes for the people around here, too.
