Review: The South - Holmfirth Picturedrome

The Beautiful South may have split up in 2006 but several members have continued on as The South.

Singers Dave Hemingway and Alison Wheeler feature on many of the bands big hits. Hemingway walks on to the Holmfirth stage wearing a hood over his head and carrying two cans of lager - he looks like he has just walked in from the local off licence rather than being the co-lead vocalist for tonight's sell out gig.

Stick It In and Turn It, the lead single off their last album opens up the set but things really take off when the old Beautiful South tracks are performed such as A Little Time, their #1 hit from 1989 that Hemingway sang on the original version, Prettiest Eyes, Old Red Eyes is Back and Bell Bottomed Tear.

Song for Whoever sees the fans singing along to all the girls' names mentioned in the song. Woman in the Wall sees some fans dancing on the stage in festive costume adding some fun to the gig.

Hemingway informs the fans "Its Christmas time and we are in Holmfirth" as he introduces a surprise track - their own version of The Pogues/Kirsty MacColl Christmas song, Fairytale of New York. The song suits Hemingway's voice mixed with the vocal from Alison Wheeler.

As entertaining and melodic as you remember them, the band never let the fans down and tonight was no exception.
