Preview Of The Yorkshire Entertainment Awards
Graham Clark, Features Writer
The very first Yorkshire Entertainment Awards are going to be held on Friday 12 October at the Civic Hall in Leeds. Recognising Yorkshire talent from the film, arts and music scene I spoke to the organiser Anthony Wright about the inaugural event.

Why did you choose Leeds to host the inaugural event?

It was a big decision where to hold the event in Yorkshire but the Civic Hall is such a prestigious venue we decided to hold the first Yorkshire Entertainment Awards there. It has had a big impact on the city plus we will be supporting the city in a big way too.

Why has there never been anything like this before?

We felt there needed to be an awards ceremony that celebrated Yorkshire talent, there have been events in the city before such as the MOBO awards that were held at Leeds Arena but we felt it was the right time for the event and Leeds is a great place to hold it.

What categories have you got?

There will be six categories such as Best DJ, Best Producer etc. Next year we hope to include sports too including rugby and football. We have DJ Ignition amongst others, it has been quite an effort to get them there but I know it will be worth it.

What has been the hardest part of organising the event?

Getting everyone together has been hard, because it is in Yorkshire though that has stripped down a lot of egos. Leeds is such a vibrant city - you have the arts, the culture. There has never been anything like this before. My dad is from Chapeltown and my mum is from Bradford so that's why it is important to have the event in Leeds too.

A lot of talent goes from Yorkshire to London and the award ceremonies are held down there but we wanted to hold the event here and to create something unique and provide an opportunity.
