Precious Wilson - On The Race Track

A recent appearance on hit Channel 4 series First Dates may have reminded a few Soul fans about Precious Wilson.

The Jamaican born songstress may not have enjoyed great solo chart success in the UK, but her work as part of Eruption has certainly endured through the years. However a lack of commercial acclaim by no way means that a body of work is not worth revisiting.

Thankfully BBR Group have simply re-assessed the quality of Wilson's solo efforts and deemed them worthy of re-release, rather than judged them solely on sales status.

Leading the way is her 1980 solo debut On The Race Track.

The album opens with the irresistible title track. A playful slice of determined disco pop, it is little surprise that this was a hit in Germany. Wilson's rich vocal is perfectly placed centre stage and should have been hailed as one of the definitive voices of her generation.

While the album's title track is without doubts one of the album's highlights, it is far from the star feature. Covers of Cry To Me and Killing Me Softly are quite simply stunning, while the Keith Forsey penned ballad Stay By My Side will leave you feeling all warm and tingly.

Showcasing a very different side to her ability, a cover of the Emily Jones single I I Loved You Less is one that should dominate your playlist for the coming months.

While On The Race Track may not have proved a commercial winner upon its release, it is a timeless collection that is truly enjoyable. Definitely one for soul, disco and pop fans to add to their collection.
