Open Day At The Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough
The chance to act on the famous Round stage, see an exciting lighting and sound demo in the McCarthy auditorium, and take home your own souvenir photo in costume is on offer at Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre next month.
The theatre is holding a free Open Day on Saturday 1 April to allow the public to see behind the scenes of the world famous venue. There will also be the chance to buy costumes, props, scripts and furniture in a sale in the theatre's Bistro area.
Participants will be invited to join a tour which will take them round the building stopping off for various activities on the way, including:
A display of model boxes of theatre sets and other archive items in the 'run-round', the Round auditorium's equivalent of the wings
The chance to tread the boards on-stage in the Round, which will have a set and scripts to hand
A lighting and sound demonstration in the endstage McCarthy auditorium
Workshops with the theatre's OutReach team
A display of costumes in the wardrobe department
A demonstration of painting techniques in the paintshop
A chance to try on costumes in the rehearsal rooms, and have pictures taken by your companions, plus a children's area with dressing up and drawing, in the rehearsal room.
Tours will start at the box office at 12.15pm, 1pm, 1.45pm, 2.30pm, 3.15pm and 4pm, and are free to join. They will overlap, with each taking a different route through the building.
Running alongside the tours, from noon to 6pm, will be a sale of costumes, props, scripts and furniture in the SJT's Bistro area, where refreshments will also be on sale.
SJT chief executive Steve Freeman says:
"All theatres are fascinating behind the scenes, but the SJT is more interesting than most as it's in the Round - people love to see the mechanics first-hand!"
