Interview With Joe Washbourn Of Toploader

Everybody remembers the band for Dancing in the Moonlight, you had other hits though?

We actually had 6 Top 20 hits but Dancing in the Moonlight is the one which everyone remembers the band for.

You have played Leeds many times?

Yes, we like playing in the city. I always remember that on the early days we were playing a gig at Joseph's Well and it was the first time we heard one of our songs on the radio. We are doing a lot of festivals this summer but it's great coming back to Leeds. The fans are always great and give us a great response.

You play a lot of these festivals, do you get chance to meet the other acts?

Weirdly not, we just play our set and move on. We occasionally bump into people but not as much as you would think. We like playing festivals as they suit our kind of music.

I hear there is a new album coming soon from the band?

That's right, we've just finished recording the album. It's due out later this year and there will be a tour too. The working title of the album is Seeing Stars.

Do you follow the current music scene?

Absolutely. When we are in the studio we listen production wise to what's around right now. The music industry has changed so much since we started. There was no social media to deal with and it was all physical products like CD's, now it's all about downloads and streaming.

If you were not a musician what would you have done?

It would have been something creative, something in the arts like being an actor.
