Gig Preview And Interview - Lisa Stansfield At York Barbican

Over the last 20 years Lisa Stansfield has been a regular on the album and singles charts. Who can forget such soulful gems as All Around The World, All Woman and Someday I'm Coming Back. For the last 6 years or so though she has been out of the limelight.

Well, now she is back, her seventh album simply titled Seven was released earlier this year and in the autumn she is going out on tour again. The tour calls in at the York Barbican on Friday 12th September.

I caught up with Lisa recently to ask her about her new album and forthcoming tour. She recently moved back to the UK from living in Dublin for a number of years. " Ian's mum (Ian Devaney - her musical partner and husband) died and although Dublin isn't that far away from the UK it seemed to be at that time" she explains "so we decided to move back to the UK and are now based in north London so we can get back up to the North easily"

Was she surprised at the warm response she received when she played some club gigs last year? "I was nervous in the beginning but it is like riding a bike, you never forget and I was surprised by the warm and enthusiastic response the fans gave me" she enthuses.

With all these 1980's package tours being so popular you would have thought that Lisa would be a prime candidate for the shows but she wants none of it "I have a bit more in me yet" she explains
"these shows are like the Last Chance Saloon for many acts, I have not given my last shot yet!" she laughed.

The new album is classic Lisa with a 21st century twist as Lisa explained "it is a renaissance of what has gone before" describes Lisa.
She also has her ears too fixed on the current pop acts "I like a lot of current stuff such as John Newman, Emeli Sande and Rudimental, its good to hear these acts and to hear that some artists are coming through who are not just from reality TV shows"

The autumn tour is highly anticipated by her fans "It would be unfair to play just my new tracks, the shows will be a mix of old and new" says the Rochdale singer.

Throughout her career she has always had an eye for fashion, in fact some of her album sleeves looked like they were from a front cover of Vogue "I like fashion and style, it is a big part of who I am" she reveals.

Lisa's music has never gone out of fashion. Make a date in your diary for Friday 12 September to see and hear one of the UK's top singers who is still at the top of her game.
