Canaan Smith

Canaan Smith first rose to prominence when he appeared on The Amazing Race in 2009. While instant celebrity could have been his career choice, he decided instead to focus on his ultimate goal of musical success. Having released his début single, We Got Us, back in 2012, he has kept his fans waiting attentively for his début album. 2015 finally sees the release of Bronco. We caught up with Canaan Smith to talk about the release.

Your début single We Got Us was released 3 years ago but does not feature on your début album. Was this a conscious decision?

It's tough narrowing down to 11 choices for first album. We Got Us is a great story song, but I felt like it wasn't a great match with my current stuff. I still break it out in the live show every now and then, and who knows, it might find a home on a future project. but for now, I picked the 11 songs I believe in most.

Your album Bronco is finally out there, what did you want to achieve with this album?

I wanted music fans to appreciate the stories on the album. I want them to find pieces of themselves in these songs. and mostly, I wanted to be honest as a writer.

Is there one song you are most excited about?

I'm stoked about all the songs, honestly! they all seem to have a life of their own. 'Love You Like That' definitely set a high bar, but I think there are songs on this album that will surpass it.

The album closes with the beautiful title track, can you tell us more about it.

'Bronco' is the title track of the album. it's a tribute to my late brother who I lost to a car accident when I was younger. In telling my story, I had to tell his. He was so proud of that blue and white ford bronco and it's still the image I see when i think of him.

How have you found the initial response to the release?

People are really getting behind this album. It's so cool to hear them singing along to cuts that aren't even singles yet. I love that they love it.

We hear you have a great live set, can we expect any appearances in the UK any time soon?

Definitely! I can't wait to cross the pond. I've got a lot of loyal fans over there, and I can't wait to bring the show to them.
