Arkansas Dave. What Makes You Cry?
Arkansas Dave came across to the UK earlier this year for a set of intimate shoes.
The performances showed he was a skilled and insightful songsmith with a vocal that moves your body and mind.
With a debut album due next year, he has just released the single Chocolate Jesus.
We caught up with him to find out what songs make him...
Ain’t Got The Blues by Blackberry Smoke. It’s such a feel good song that you can’t help but smile when you hear it…such a great hook, and relatable lyrics.
I always thought it would be clever to write a song with as many Southern colloquialisms as you could fit in one song, then I heard Ain’t Got The Blues and knew that I’ll never top it; so I’ll leave that up to Charlie and the boys…lol
Contemplate FEEL by Kendrick Lamar. That song is so introspective and honest that I feel that the lyrics really echo my life. No matter what walk of life you come from, many of us walk similar paths that makes you not feel so alone in this world knowing theirs other people, peers even, that experience the same things.
Song For You by Leon Russell. It’s a beautiful song that shares many sentiments that I could only hope to put into a song so eloquently and honestly.
If You Don’t Love The Lord by The Beaumonts. It’s such a funny and irreverent song, that I just admire the tenacity of The Beaumonts to make such an on-the-nose song.
It’s perfect. It’s kinda hard to take them serious as a band because all of their songs are so cheeky and purposely controversial that it’s almost comedy, but all of them are excellent musicians so you have to respect their commitment to their brand of country music.
Want to work out
Bulls on Parade by Rage Against the Machine. This song definitely makes me want to get up and move around. The lyrics and overall message is powerful and energizing.
Whipping Post by the Allman Brothers. This song reminds me of driving the back roads in my hometown - when you hit the gravel road, you roll down the windows, wind blowing through your hair with the stereo cranked up as loud is it would go.
When the song kicks off, I get the chills and go wandering through my mind about my life, the moment, the anger and pain Gregg Allman sings about and interpreted by Duane’s powerful, emotional guitar solos mixed with the masterful rhythm section of Jaimoe and Butch Trucks. I love this band and this song makes me cry everytime I hear it, and will always hold a close place in my heart. Rock In Peace, Gregg & Duane.
Breathe (In The Air) by Pink Floyd. I used to fall asleep every night to Dark Side of the Moon, and this song makes me definitely relax and let my mind drift. Every time I hear this song, no matter the setting, I feel a warm feeling wash over me. The textures and colours in this song is just pure beauty.
Exodus by Bob Marley. It is such an empowering song that sends out a positive message. I truly believe that Bob Marley was a prophet and spoke from another plane of consciousness. I feel that we need Bob more than ever now, and his message of love should be spread throughout the world. Because what the world needs now is love…
I Got That Feelin’ by James Brown. I dare you to stay still when listening to this song, you can’t! James Brown was so influential to so many artists that came after him that he will forever be remembered as the Godfather of Soul. Few people can be considered legends, and James Brown is one of those few people.
