Album Review: Frank Turner - Tape Deck Heart
Rating 4/5
After a year that saw Frank Turner headline a sold out gig at Wembley Arena and a performance at the London Olympics opening ceremony, Turner has released his fifth studio album, Tape Deck Heart (Xtra Mile Recordings).
On the album he shows many influences; opening track 'Recovery' is a jaunty folk infused track that brings to mind The Levellers and the Wonderstuff, whilst 'Losing Days' recalls The Cure around their "Its Friday I'm in Love" period.
{{'With the melodic gift of Green Day and the lyrical observation of Billy Bragg, Turner has delivered another top album'}}Always a good lyricist Turner comes up with some classic thought provoking lines, "love is all about the changes you make and not just three words" ('The Way I Tend To Be') whilst 'Four Simple Words' is directed to fans who may be listening to his songs at home or at work - Turner telling about his love affair with music. The four words by the way are "I want to dance".
If you liked Billy Bragg or Tom Robinson you will like this album as Turner's music is very much in that style and he is also a great storyteller. He has appeared in the pages of publications as diverse as Kerrang! and folk magazines such is the wide appeal of his music.
'Tell Tale Signs' is one of the slowest tracks on the album and is about being used and feeling hurt and covering the scars with tattoos.
The album is consistently good and will be appreciated by his young fans... and their parents too. With the melodic gift of Green Day and the lyrical observation of Billy Bragg, Turner has delivered another top album.
