Review: Solid Silver 60's Show - Halifax

The Solid Silver Sixties shows appear to be as popular as ever: it's easy to see why as the 5 acts can all still cut it live on one bill.

The New Amen Corner may have only one original member left in the line up but the band worked hard backing the solo performers of the night, as well as doing their own hits such as If Paradise is Half As Nice.

A hand with a white glove appears from the side of the stage as Dave Berry makes his customary entrance. He can still sing and I felt that he still had a strong stage presence. Mind you, he has had 55 years in the business so he knows what he is doing. A veteran of these tours he changes his set list around each year to keep it fresh. Little Things and of course The Crying Game conclude a varied yet entertaining set.

The Merseybeats know how to get the crowd going, it might have been a tad predictable but Hi Ho Silver Lining had the audience out of their seats. A version of the Chris Farlowe hit Out of Time was a highlight, along with Sorrow.

Brian Hyland performed a varied set. His massive hit Sealed With A Kiss has worn well compared to Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini, which sounds rather dated by today's standards. He covers Jimi Hendrix to Procul Harlem in a set of light and shade.

Peter Noone has probably had the most hits of the acts tonight. He jokes about the M62 and how he used to ride his bike on it before it opened, to talking to the audience about the first time he played a gig in Halifax. He still possesses a youthful enthusiasm and seems genuinely pleased to be on the tour. Kind of Hush and I'm Into Something Good were the highlights of a marvellous performance.

No reputations were tarnished tonight, in fact it just showed that although the acts might be older, they are all still good singers and performers.
