Review: Roisin Murphy - Albert Hall, Manchester

To call Roisin Murphy different to your normal singer is a bit of an understatement. The former singer of Moloko has been away from the pop limelight for many years, in that time she has started a family and recorded her new album released earlier this year.

The only other artist I have seen who seems to wear a whole new outfit for each song was Grace Jones; Roisin Murphy shares the same quirkiness too as Jones.

Before she enters the stage, the screen on the stage shows her putting on her gloves and getting ready, she seems to have a love for gloves and must own many pairs! Walking on stage to perform Let Me Know it is not long before she sings a Moloko track, Dirty Monkey.

"I'm Home" she announces to her Manchester fans. Things start to get into high gear with Overpowered. If she is not wearing a mask with 3 heads, she is wearing a different outfit or a selection of hats. "You would never guess that I liked dressing up as a child" she says in deadpan style.

Her time spent living in Sheffield is the subject matter of House of Glass. Disappointingly there is no full blown version of the big Moloko hit, Sing it Back, instead she just slips part of the song into Exploitation.

Her young band kept the electronic vibe hitting the target throughout the gig.

A true artist who is true to herself, she might come across as a bit of a fruitcake but she is an original who is to be treasured in the bland modern world of X Factor wannabes.
