Gig Review: Roy Wood - Holmfirth Picturedrome

At Christmas time it is hard not to hear the Roy Wood/Wizard track I wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday but there is more to Roy Wood than the track that he is best remembered for as tonight's gig shows.

The saxophone section was always a string element in the Wizard songs and tonight he has a 4 piece horn section on stage with him that makes opening number California Man shine.

It is not long before he revisits his early career days as lead singer and songwriter in The Move as Fire Brigade strikes a chord with the Holmfirth audience. He informs the audience that he and his band had performed a version of the track on stage with The Beach Boys earlier this year.

The hits continued with See My Baby Jive, Flowers in the Rain (the first song to be played on Radio 1), Blackberry Way and of course, I Wish it could Be Christmas Everyday as the band wear Santa hats. There are not many acts you see that can play back to back #1 hit singles.

It had been a night of classic hits from one of pop music's great songwriters.
