Album Review: Robin McKelle - The Looking Glass

10 years after she first emerged this American artist releases her new album, The Looking Glass. This is her first album composed totally of new songs. In the last she has been compared to Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and Gladys Knight but I can hear a comparison to Roisin Murphy on these jazz infused tracks.

The album opens up with Gravity, one of her own songs that has a jaunty vibe with its keyboard hook. The first single off the album, Stand Up has nods back to the 70's with soul flavours.

I'm The One is a passionate plea to a lover and is one of the best tracks on the album. On Brave Love she goes for a co-write with Sam Barsh and this track would make a stunning single. Her profile would be raised if the likes of Radio 2 played her songs. This soulful song has a keyboard refrain that runs throughout the song and with the right mix could also crossover to a dance audience.

A great discovery and worth checking out if you like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott or Angie Stone, alongside jazz influenced artists such as Sade.

4 out of 5.
